Lymphedema Flashcards
Lymphedema
An accumulation of protein - rich fluid in the interstitial spaces leading to the chronic inflammation and fibrosis in the affected tissues
What is the lymphatic system?
-One way system that starts blindly in the interstitium
-Open system/ no central pump/ no valves
-Garbage disposal and recycling system
-Responsible for maintain aging fluid homeostasis by managing interstitial fluid and mobilizing waste products
-Recycles plasma proteins back into bloodstream
-Absorbs and transports lipids and fatty acids to the circulatory system
-Transports antigens, antigen-presenting cells, and other immune cells to the lymph nodes where adaptive immunity is stimulated
Regional lymph nodes
Cervical lymph nodes
Axillary lymph nodes
Inguinal lymph nodes
Lymphatic capillaries
Single layer of endothelial cells; may overlap or lay close to each other
When we swell, valves are pulled apart to allow fluid into lymphatic capillaries
Lymph nodes
Functions
1. Protective: filters harmful material in lymph fluid
2. Immune: lymph nodes produce antigen-stimulated lymphocytes
3. Thickening of lymph fluid
Lymphatic trunks
Thoracic duct - Originates anterior to vertebrae t11-L2
Follows similar path to arterial and venous flow
What makes up lymphatic system?
Proteins
Water
Cells
Fat (only in digestive system)
Superficial through the skin layer
Each organ has its own lymphatic structure
