Norepinephrine/dopamine reuptake inhibitor
Therapeutic class: Antidepressant
Examples:
buproprion (Wellbutrin)
Mechanism of Action
Structurally similar to amphetamine (mild stimulant)
Weakly acts as a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake blocker
Actions and Uses
Uniquely increased dopamine in “reward area” of brain
Smoking cessation, depression, major depressive disorder
Minimal sexual dysfunction side effect
Does not inhibit monoamine oxidase or reuptake of serotonin
Adverse Effects
Hepatoxicity
If drug abuse history: mild amphetamine-like effect
Black Box Warning
Increased risk of suicide
Contraindication
Seizure disorder, bulimia/anorexia (increased seizure risk), Zyban (same ingredient), alcohol/drug withdrawal, MAOIs
Interactions
Zyban, MAOIs
