Mechanism of Action
Selective monaminergic antagonist with strong affinity for serotonin receptors and weaker affinity for dopamine
Antipsychotic activity may be mediated through antagonism at combination of receptor sites

Bipolar 1 disorder, Schizophrenia
Adverse Effects
Rash, hyperproactinemia, weight gain, constipation, diarrhea, excessive salivation, increased appetite, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, dystonia, Parkinsonism, tremor, prolonged QT interval, DKA, hypothermia, pancreatitis, agranulocytosis, priapism, neuroleptic malignant syndrome
Black Box Warning
Dementia-related psychosis: increased risk of death
Contraindications
Paliperidone (active metabolite of risperidone)
Interactions
ketoconzole, citalopram, -floxacins, linezolid, methadone, many more
Pregnancy Category
fetal risk cannot be ruled out
