A
Therapeutic class: sedative-hypnotic; anxiolitic Examples: lorazepam (Activan) diazepam ( Valium) alprazolam ( Xanax) clonazepam (Klonopin)
- lorazapam: one of the most potent benzodiazepines

A
binds to GABA receptor-chloride channel molecule, which intensifies GABA effects.

Actions and Uses
A
Primary use for anxiety disorders and insomnia
Potentiates effects of GABA (inhibitory neurotransmitter)
in thalamic, hypothalamic and limbic levels of CNS.

Contraindications
A
Acute narrow-angle glaucoma, closed-angle glaucoma, liver disease, impaired brain function, suicidal ideations

Interactions
A
May decrease anti-parkinsonism effects of levodopa
Herbals: kava, valerian, chamolmile, hops

Overdose
A
flumazenil (Romazicon) reverses CNS depressant effects
