Nav 34 - Integrated Nav Computers Flashcards

1
Q

What are the advantages of Integrated Navigation Computers?

A

Redundancy, other system to use if a system is lost
Accuracy check between computers
Different sources of information used to calculate navigation solution
Ability to use strengths of one system to offset weaknesses of another
Use one system for calculation while other navigates

Q

What is the EOC Check Procedure?

A

Hold computers (DID or Px hold)
Log the GPS and INS positions
Plot both GPS and INS on map, annotate with the time positions were taken
Measure distance between plotted GPS and INS
If INS is within 5nm of GPS, no update required. Outside 5nm, update required.
Log the number of tracking and visible satellites
Log and plot computers wind and compare to planned. Adjust if significantly different
Log G/S and DA from primary computer
Log Doppler G/S and DA and compare to computer information

Q

Regarding the EOC Check Procedure, when shall GPS be the primary navigation computer? When shall it not?

A

If 3 or more satellites are tracked, GPS shall be the primary navigation computer.

If 2 or less satellites are being tracked, the INS shall be the primary

Q

Navaids are another enroute responsibility, Navaids should be?

A
Diversified (don't pick the same one for VOR 1 & 2)
In range
Geographically separated (in different locations from the plane itself

Q

When can the Lead calculate ETAs?

A

Cleared on course;
Abeam navaid/ aerodrome; and
Above 100nm safe altitude, or when safely able if not flying above the 100 nm safe altitude

17
Q

What is the purpose of an EOC check?

A

Confirms accuracy of navigation computers and which will be the primary source of navigation.

18
Q

When can you start your EOC check?

A

Do not start until aircraft is +/- 30° from the on course and above safety altitude

19
Q

What does the Lead say to the pilot after completing the EOC check?

A

“Pilot, Lead, computers have been assessed, GPS (or INS) is primary, we are in transit, you have the nav.”
