Nav 14 / 15 Triangles of Velocity Flashcards
Define the following:
Velocity
Rate of change of position in a given direction
Define the following:
Vector
Graphical representation of velocity
Define the following:
True Heading (TH)
Direction in which the aircraft is pointed relative to TRUE NORTH
Define the following:
True Air Speed (TAS)
The speed of the aircraft (in knots) relative to the still air mass surrounding it.
Define the following:
Track Made Good (TMG)
The path of the aircraft over the ground
Define the following:
Required Track (Rqd Tr)
The intended path of the aircraft over the ground.
Define the following:
Ground Speed (G/S)
The speed of the aircraft (in knots) relative to the ground
Define the following:
Wind Velocity (W/V)
The direction and speed of the air mass over the ground. Direction is the true direction from which the wind is blowing. Speed is in knots.
Define the following:
Drift
The lateral movement imparted to the aircraft on to the aircraft by the wind.
Define the following:
Drift Angle
The angular difference between the true heading and the track. The drift angle is also referred to as “Crab Angle”
What are the 6 variables of the Triangle of Velocity?
W/V - Speed and direction
Air Vector - TH and TAS
Ground Vector - Track and G/S
Review Questions
What are the three vectors in the triangle of velocities and their components?
Air vector - TH and TAS (Red with one chevron)
Ground / Track vector - Trk and G/S (Green with two chevrons)
Wind Vector - Wind speed and direction (Blue with three chevrons)
