natural selection and genetic modification Flashcards
what is natural selection
this is where only the organisms which are best fit for the current environment will survive
what is a pentadactyl limb
it is a limb with 5 digits
what are the 5 kingdoms
Animals, Plants, Fungi, Prokaryotes, Protists
what is selective breeeding
this is when humans select two plants or animals which will be bred in order to get a desired trait
explain the process of tissue culture
- First, choose the plant you want to clone
- remove several small pieces of tissue from the parent plant
- grow this tissue in growth hormones
- a whole new plant will then grow from the tissue
what are restriction enzymes
they recognise specific sequences of DNA and cut it
what are ligase enzymes
they are enzymes used to join two pieces of DNA together at their sticky ends
what is recombinant DNA
this is two different bits of DNA stuck together
what is a vector
this is something thats used to transfer DNA into a cell.
What are the two types of DNA
Plasmid and virus
why were the three domain system introduced
-this was due to the discovery of a new group of prokaryotes called archae
how do you remember the classification
