brain Flashcards
what is the hypothalamus:
-Regulates temperature and water balance in the body
what is the medulla oblongata
controls unconscious activities such as heart and breathing rate
what is the cerebellum
controls balance, coordination of muscles
what is the cerebrum
-largest part of the brain
-it is split into 2 hemispheres
-the left hemisphere controls muscles on the right and vice versa
-it controls our senses, intelligence, personality and thought
what is a CT scanner and why is it used
-a CT scanner uses X-rays to produce an image of the brain
-it shows the main structures in the brain but it doesn’t show the function of them
-if it shows a diseased structure, it means the patient has lost some functions
-it highlights area of high density of cells
what is a PET scanner and what is it used for
this is when the patient digests radioactive glucose.
they can be very detailed
it can show areas of the brain which are unusually inactive or active
why can treating problems in the CNS be tricky
-hard to repair damage in the nervous system
-not easy to access
-can lead to permanent damage
where in the cerebrum is vision controlled
