Enzymes Flashcards
what are catalysts produced by living things called
enzymes
what two types of reactions do enzymes perform
break down reactions, synthesis reactions
what is the active side of the enzyme
this is the part where the substrate binds into the enzyme
what is the effect of temperature in enzyme activity
Increasing the temperature will increase enzyme activity. but if it gets too hot, enzymes will denature
what is the effect of pH level on enzyme activity
if pH level is too high or low, enzymes will get denatured. all enzymes have different optimum pH levels
what is the effect of substrate concentration on enzyme activity
increasing the substrate concentration will increase enzyme acitivity up to a certain point. but after that point, all active sites are full and enzyme activity will stay the same
what is the formula for the rate of reaction
1000/time
why do substrates need to be broken down
so they can pass through digestive system easily and also so they can be used for growth and other life processes
what is the specific substrate for amylase
starch
