Natural selection Flashcards
1 - natural selection
- All organisms produce more offspring than can possibly survive
2 - natural selection
- In every species, there is variation. Different individuals show many differences from each other.
3 - natural selection
- Nature selects which individual survives. Factors such as predators, disease, climate etc determine which individual survive and breed,
4 - natural selection
- The survivor breed and pass on to offspring the characteristics which helped them survive
5 - natural selection
- This may mean that each succeeding generation is slightly different in which variations are most common. Gradually over generations, these changes accumulate as ‘natural selection’ keeps choosing survivors. Gradually the population evolved into a new type, and eventually new species.
What is the relation to the theory of evolution?
• Often seems as if evolution deliberately causes changes towards a certain goals, but characteristics are already present in population among other variations. Simply become more common in later generations because of natural selection.
In later generation, why would the whole population look different?
because one type has become predominant. Eventually it may become new species
Why is natural selection and varieties important?
• Important as avoid extinction. Greater chance that at least some will survive and breed when environment changes.
