Distance/Weight/Mass Flashcards
What does the brightness of a star from us (its apparent magnitude) depend on?
on its actual brightness (its absolute magnitude) and its distance from Earth
What might a dim star close to us appear like?
appear brighter than a really bright star a long way away
What must astronomers know to calculate the absolute magnitude of a star?
how far away it is
What does the colour red and white/blue mean?
The colour of a star depends on its surface temperature: red stars are cool, and white and blue stars are hot.
Mass?
measure of how much stuff is in an object.
Weight?
Weight is a force acting on that stuff. Weight is the result of gravity
Explain example of Earth’s gravity:
The Earth’s gravity attracts objects towards the centre of the Earth and you feel forces like this as weight.
