Fossil formation Flashcards
WHat is fossil?
the remains, or traces, of a living thing from the past. It could be a bone, tooth, shell, imprint, footprint, burrow
What is study of fossil called?
palaentology
Why is it rare to be preserved fossils?
•Usually when living thing dies, it remains are eaten or rot away as the decomposer do their job
Where are most fossils found?
Most common when remains sink to bottom of sea or lake and are rapidly buried in mud following a flood, or volcanic eruption buries the remains in volcanic ash.
Where are fossils preserved?
rock layers
What type of rock is it in?
Sediments containing remains are buried and compressed, become sedimentary rock such as shale of limestone.
During millions of year, the remains may be reduced to?
just a carbon print, or be replaced by minerals from surrounding rock
What happens to expose these rocks to surface? What happens to the fossils?
Earth movements and erosion expose these rocks at the surface, many cases the fossil is then destroyed by erosion
