Chemistry Flashcards
3 properties of bases
Bitter taste
Proton acceptors
Release hydroxide ions
Name three properties or features of acids
- corrosive
- sour taste
- release hydrogen ions
2 observations when piece of magnesium dropped
Temperature rises
Bubbles form and gas is produced
Why does colour change occur?
It indicates a change in molecule. Different combination of molecules reflect light differently
Word equation for reaction between sodium surface and calcium nitrate:
Sodium sulfate + calcium nitrate -> sodium nitrate + calcium sulfate
Just swap the two around
Name of white powder and why it is formed
Nitrate salts
Formed when the hydrogen ions react with hydroxide ions to form water and ‘salt’
What is neutralisation?
It occurs when acid is mixed with base. Each destroys the other so the product are neutral water
Write procedure to prove neutralisation
- Out small volume of base in test tube (20 drops)
- Add small drop of indicator
- Add drops of acid until colour changes
- Add base to it to change the colour back
- Repeat with different indicators and acids
How did u know neutralisation occured from the experiment?
When the base was the dropped to the acid mixture to change back the colour and neutralise it. Acid more dominant, therefore had the colour change, but as you begin to add back the base, it becomes even and creates a clear solution.
Iron + copper sulfate ->
Copper + iron sulfate
Hydrochloric acid + magnesium ->
Hydrogen + magnesium chloride
Sulfuric acid + ________ -> sodium sulfate + water
Sodium hydroxide
Natural gas + oxygen ->
Carbon dioxide + water
Calcium chloride + silver nitrate ->
Silver chloride + calcium nitrate
Nitric acid + calcium carbonate ->
Calcium nitrate + carbon dioxide + water
