Natural + Human Impacts on the Environment Flashcards
What causes bushfires ?(Natural impacts)
heat/loghtning strike
accidently lit
on purpose
What is the positive effect of bush fires (natural)
promotes germination because plants adapt to survive and benefit from fire. some plants - banksias + hakeas - need fire to grow
What is the negative effect of bush fires (natural)
destructs animals/plants/towns and people
What causes drought?(Natural impacts)
lack of rainfall to no rain
What is the negative effect of drought (natural)
increases death rate because not enough water which affects whole food web. lack of plant coverage leads to soil erosion and even if rain comes water erosion can further damage soil.
What causes flooding?(Natural impacts)
heavy rain causing water sources to over flow
What is the positive effect of floods (natural)
lead to explosion of life = expansion of ecosystem
What is the negative effect of flood (natural)
lack of oxygen kills land species
What are some examples of chemical pollution (human)
oil spills, sewage, fertilisers, acid rain, radio active waste, global warming
what is agricultural development and why is ti bad? (human)
native crops are replaced by new different crops
what is miningdevlopment and why is ti bad? (human)
native vegetation is removed and toxic chemicals can seep into the water which can stop plant growth
what is logging development and why is ti bad? (human)
forests sawed up and used as building timber/firewood
what is urbanization development and why is ti bad? (human)
growth of cites looses natural habitat
What are introduced species?
animals and plants brought to Australia from other countries
What are some examples of introduced animals?
feral cats, camels, donkeys, horses, goats, mice, rats and pigs destroy habitat and compete with native animals for food and shelter
