Q

Explain Transfer of energy (use example of mouse, grass and eagle as well)

A

when a mouse eats it grass a transfer of energy from the grass to mouse occurs. The mouse then uses 90% of this energy to keep warm, build new cells and grow etc. When an eagle comes along to eat the mouse he only gets 10% of the energy because the rest has been used.

Q

Why are food chains short?

A

Because 90% of energy is being used up at a time from the original source so it runs out quickly.

Q

What does an energy pyramid represent?

A

represents the energy in food materials at each level in a food chain. The area of each rectangle represents the amount of energy

Q

What does a productivity pyramid show?

A

shows how much energy is used up per square meter by each feeding level in a year. Gives an idea of how productive and ecosystem is (how well it supports life)
