Abiotic and Biotic Factors Flashcards
Abiotic Factor
non living factors of an environment
water - abiotic factor
all organisms need water it is essential for chemical reaction in the cells of living organisms and it is vital for the survival of land organisms.
temperature - abiotic factor
affects the speed of chemical reactions in cells (temperature increases = reaction increases)
fire - abiotic factor
some plants and animals die in fire whereas others benefit from the chemicals in the smoke produced.
light - abiotic factor
light is necessary for photosynthesis it causes plant growth and flowering in many species.
soil type - abiotic factor
different soils hold more nutrients or water than others.
gas levels - abiotic factor
oxygen is needed for respiration. carbon dioxide can affect the rate of photosynthesis.
Biotic Factor
living factor of an environment
intraspecific - biotic factor
relationships between organisms of the same species
interspecific - biotic factor
relationships between organisms of different species
predator - biotic factor
an organism that hunts and eats another organism
prey - biotic factor
the organism which is hunted an ate by the predator
parasitism - biotic factor
one species benefits and the other is harmed (e.g. mosquitoes, fleas on dogs, bacteria)
commensalism - biotic factor
where one species benefits and the other is not harmed (clown-fish getting protection from anemones)
mutualism -biotic factor
where both species benefit ( bees receive pollen from plants and drop it back off pollinating other plants, ox pecker eats ticks off impalas back and impala gets tick free body)
