Food Chains and Food Webs Flashcards
What is the definition of a food chain?
a diagram showing the sequence of organisms feeding off each other.
what do the arrows represent in a food web/chain?
represent the direction matter and energy pass from each organism to the next
What is the definition of a food web?
shows the connection of different food chains in a community
What is a producer (autotroph)?
an organism that makes food for the community through photosynthesis
What do producers producers food from?
Carbon Dioxide, water and salts
What are three examples of producers?
grass, berries, trees, leaves
What is a consumer (hetrotroph)?
organisms that feed on other organisms because they can not synthesize their own food.
What is a herbivore and what is its mirrored feeding level?
Herbivores eat only plants
Primary Consumers - eat the producers
What is a carnivore and what is its mirrored feeding level?
carnivores eat only meat
Secondary consumers - eat the primary consumers
What is a omnivore and what is its mirrored feeding level?
omnivores eat both plants and meat
tertiary consumers - eat the secondary consumers
what is a decomposer?
organisms that break down and eat the bodies of dead organisms
Why are decomposers important?
Because they break organic matter and recycle it nutrients back to the producers allow them to receive nutrients
