Adaptations and Environmental Changes Flashcards
What is the definition of adaptations?
characteristics which every organism has to enable its survival in its habitat.
what is the definition of physical adaptations?
body structures that allow an animal to find and consume food, defend itself and to reproduce
what are some examples of physical adaptations?
camouflage, mimicry (mimicking noises and looks), defense (venom, ink, poison)
what is the definition of behavioral adaptations?
allows animals to respond to lifes needs. There are two types instinctive and learned.
what is the definition and some examples of instinctive adaptations?
happens naturally doesn’t need learning (e.g. hibernation, migration, caring fro young, finding shelter, defense)
what is the definition and some examples of learned adaptations?
behavior that must be taught (e.g. obtained by interacting with its environment)
what is the definition of functional (physiological) adaptations?
the way an organism works which is controlled automatically (unconsciously)
what are some examples of functional adaptations?
dilation of blood vessels when hot, goose bumps when cold, shivering
What is the definition of birth rate?
number of individuals born per 1000 of the population
what is an example of how environment changes birth rate?
the more food there is the more energy adults have for breeding and surviving so when food sources are high birth rate goes up.
what is the definition of death rate?
number of individuals who die per 1000 of the population
what is an example of how environment changes death rate?
low temperatures can increase death rate whereas more food can decrease it.
what is the definition of immigration?
number of individuals moving into and area per 1000 of the population in the area.
what is an example of how environment changes immigration?
the more resources like food/water an area has the more animals will move to it
what is the definition of emigration
number of individuals moving out of an area per 1000 of the population in the area.
