Transportation, Storage and Security
Placards
DOT requires diamond shaped signs to be placed on vehicles that transport certain types and quantities of hazardous materials
Transportation Security Plan
must be developed and implemented if you ship or transport materials in quantities that require placards
Placard Requirements
if the pesticide bears a DOT poison label, in containers larger than 119 gallons, in quantities greater than 1,000 pounds
Security Plan Requirements
measure to prevent unauthorized access, security check of employees who pick up and transport, intended route of travel
Well Designed Storage Site Characteristics
limited access, inventory control, protects people from exposure, reduces chance of environmental contamination, prevents temperature extremes and excess moisture, safeguards from theft, vandalism and unauthorized use, allows fire dept to know location
Site Security
keep locked when not in use, post warning signs on doors and windows
Moisture Damage to Pesticides
rust of metal containers, degradation of paper and cardboard containers, degradation of labeling, dry pesticides to clump, degrade or dissolve, slow release products to begin releasing
Safe Storage of Containers
store in original containers, always use proper labels, keep securely closed, raise products up on pallets
Isolate Unwanted or Waste Products
do not accumulate outdated or unwanted products, dispose of as soon as possible
Site Security Benefits
employee / community safety, maintain operational integrity, reduce insurance costs, prevents theft / vandalism / sabotage, protects confidential business information, improves relationships w/ local authorities & emergency services
Risk Assessment
first step in developing a security program; make a list of assets that need protecting, possible threats and steps that can be taken to protect them
Minimizing Security Risks
adopt measures to deter tampering, include local authorities in planning, keep an accurate inventory at all times, keep storage areas locked, update emergency response plan and practice the procedures, post all emergency numbers, restrict access to nonemployees
