Canopy Restoration Flashcards
Topped Trees
topped branches cause an overcompensation of sprouting, too many sprouts causes weak attachment and are more susceptible to disease. correct by removing and subordinating sprouts utilizing directional pruning to create a new leader
Lions-Tailed Trees
have been overthinned; allow sprouts to develop along the branches for a few years while the tree rebuilds its energy sources - then selectively remove and subordinate new sprouts to create a new leader
Tipped Trees
same as topping except the pruning cuts are smaller in diameter (rounding over) remove all but one sprout from some of the tipping cuts, remove some branches that were tipped back to the trunk or laterals, space scaffold branches far enough apart so they can develop laterals
Storm Damaged Trees
damage will elicit water sprouts, allow them to grow for a few years to restore vigor to the tree, save the sprouts spaced apart from each other that appear to be capable to growing into strong limbs
Neglected Trees
will need everything; subordination, reduction, thinning, cleaning and risk reduction
Max Canopy Removal for Young Trees
25-30%
Max Canopy Removal for Medium Aged Trees
20-25%
Max Canopy Removal for Mature Trees
10-15%
Pruning to Slow Growth
remove, reduce or head (only on branches 1-2 years old)
