Nasal Cavity (week 2) Flashcards
Inferior Meatus has an opening to what space?
Nasolacrimal Duct
Superior Meatus has an opening to what space?
Posterior Ethmoid Air Cells
Middle Meatus has an opening to what spaces?
Frontal Sinus, Maxillary Sinus, Anterior Ethmoid Air Cells
What is the Ethmoid Bulla?
A bulge created by the Ethmoid Air cells
What are the 2 main sources for arteries to the nasal cavity?
Maxillary and Anterior & Posterior Ethmoid arteries
What are the two main arterial branches off of the Maxillary artery that supplies blood to the nasal cavity
Sphenopalatine and Greater Palatine artery
What is the pathway of the Maxillary Artery to provide blood to the nasal cavity?
Infratemporal Fossa –> Pterygopalatine Fossa –> Sphenopalatine Foramen
Does the facial artery send branches to septum?
Yes. It sends some branches from the superior labial artery to the septum. However, this is not considered one of the major sources.
What branches off of the Sphenopalatine artery as it runs along the septum?
Lateral Posterior nasal branches
What branch of the Internal Carotid artery supplies blood to the nasal cavity?
Opthalmic –> Anterior and Posterior ethmoidal arteries
What cranial nerve gives General Sensory to the nasal cavity?
Trigeminal - V1 and V2
The nasopalatine nerve is a branch of what cranial nerve?
Cranial Nerve V-V2
The Anterior Ethmoidal Nerve is a branch off of what cranial nerve?
CN V-V1. Also a branch off of Nasocilliary nerve
What nerve sends branches to Posterior and Inferior Septum then continues to Incisive Canal?
Nasopalatine Nerve
Posterior Lateral Nasal nerve is a branch off of what Cranial Nerve?
CN V-V2.
What nerve sends internal nasal branches to anterior and superior septum and lateral walls?
Anterior Ethmoidal Nerve
What are the three specific nerve branches that supply general sensory to the nasal cavity?
Anterior Ethmoidal Nerve, Nasopalatine nerve and Posterior Lateral Nasal nerve
The Anterior Ethmoidal nerve is a branch off of what specific branch of the V1 nerve?
Nasocilliary nerve
What nucleus are the Preganglionic cell bodies of CN VII housed in before they supply parasympathetic innervation to the Smooth Muscle and Glands of Nose?
Superior Salivatory Nucleus
What cranial nerve supplies Parasympathetic innervation to the smooth muscle and glands of nose?
CN VII
Pre-ganglionic parasympathetic fibers synapse with Post-ganglionic fibers in what ganglion that ends up going to nasal cavity?
Pterygopalatine ganglion
What sympathetic ganglion do sympathetic fibers that end up in the nasal cavity synapse in?
Superior Cervical Ganglia
What are the four paranasal sinuses?
Frontal, Sphenoidal, Ethmoidal and Maxillary
Spenoethmoidal recess has an opening to what sinus?
Sphenoid sinus
