What is Narcan used for?
A
Narcan is an opioid antagonist that blocks opioid receptors to fight an overdose.

How is Narcan used in the OB?
A
Narcan reverses the effects of opioid induced RDS in mothers and newborns

A
IM, IV, or SQ

How long should breastfeeding be delayed after taking Narcan?
A
Breastfeeding should be delayed for 2 hours following the last dose.

How much Narcan should be given to infants?
A
0.1mg/kg for infants weighing less than 5kg

If there is an opioid dependance in the mother or baby, should you give Narcan?
A
No. If opioids were given for pain, the pain will return suddenly if the opioid if stopped by Narcan.
