What is Pitocin?
The synthetic form of Oxytocin
What does Pitocin do to the body of a pregnant mother?
Pitocin stimulates Uterine contractions and aids in Milk let-down
What would Pitocin be used for?
Pitocin would be used for inducing or augmenting labor
Besides the induction or augmentation of labor, what else is Pitocin good for?
The treatment of PPH, Post-Partum Hemorrhaging.
What route do you give Pitocin?
IV, through an IV infusion pump
If you want to induce Labour, you should infuse Pitocin at:
A.) 1-2 Milliunits/min
B.) 125-200 Milliunits/min
c.) 12-15 Milliunits/min
D.) 30-60 Milliunits/min
Correct: A.) 1-2 Milliunits/min
Increase every 15-30 minutes depending on providers orders
B.) this is the rate for PPH treatment. Give this rate at 125-200 Milliunits/min through an IV infusion pump or 10-20 units IM
What should always be done prior to administering Pitocin on a pregnant woman?
Obtain a baseline for mother and baby
What will you monitor in a patient after giving Pitocin?
You will monitor their FHT’s (Fetal Heart Tones) and their CTX (Contractions) q15 minutes
Pitocin can cause a complication called: Uterine Tachysystole. What is Uterine Tachysystole?
Uterine Tachysystole is uterine contractions at a rate of more than 5 CTX every 10 minutes over a 30-minute window.
If Pitocin causes Uterine Tachysystole, what should be done?
Decrease Pitocin amounts if the baby or mother shows signs of distress.
