The consul was a republic but napoleon had absolute power, he appointed officials controlled the army conducted for feign affairs etc and was friend with Napoleon took part of the coup détat that overthrew the directory

A

when russia decided to pull out of the continental system which was in direct defiance of napoleon napoleon decided to make an example of them

he invaded russia but attacked in the summer and left in the winter and practiced the scorched earth policy and it was the dumbest idea yet and caused the great retreat and 97% of napoleons army died and he lost his power
