what was the consul and how did it come about?
The consul was a republic but napoleon had absolute power, he appointed officials controlled the army conducted for feign affairs etc and was friend with Napoleon took part of the coup détat that overthrew the directory
how did he do well
he restored economic prosperity by controlling prices, encouraging new industry and building roads and canals
he was a believed of the enlightenment and in the philosophy of reason

- religious tolerance
- abolition of serfdom (slaves)
- no rights for women
- now divorces (in line of the catholic doctrine)

he controlled all the mail, and read it so that he could control rumours as well as prevent treason and plots to overthrow them

what was napoleons grand empire composed of
- The french empire which was an enlarged france and inner core of european states (ruled by napoleons relatives)
- Allied states which were countries that were conquered by Napoleons and then forced to join the struggle against great britain
what napoleon try to spread in his empire
he tried to spread some of the principals of the french revolution including legal equality religious tolerance and economic freedom he tried to destroy the old order
what happened to his empire
it collapsed as quickly as it was built

when russia decided to pull out of the continental system which was in direct defiance of napoleon napoleon decided to make an example of them
he invaded russia but attacked in the summer and left in the winter and practiced the scorched earth policy and it was the dumbest idea yet and caused the great retreat and 97% of napoleons army died and he lost his power
