Naloxone (Narcan) Flashcards
Narcan: Class
Opioid antagonist
Narcan: Action
- Reversed respiratory depression, sedation, and hypotensive effects of opioid overdose by occupying opiate receptor sites
Narcan: Onset
IV/IN = 1-2 minutes
IM = 2-5 minutes
Narcan: Duration
IV 30-60 min, IM longer
Narcan: Indication
Adult
Adult: Poisoning/OD
Adult: Altered Neurological
- symptomatic suspected opioid OD with respirations <12
Narcan: Indication
PEDS
PEDS: Poisoning/OD
PEDS: Altered Neurological
- Symptomatic Suspected Opioid OD
Narcan: Dosage/Route
Adult
Adult:
2mg IN/IM/IV; MR titrate IV dose to effect To drive the respiratory rate
… if patient refuses transport: give 2mg “for the road”
Narcan: Dosage/Route
If patient refuses transport
If patient refuses transport:
2mg IM additional dose
Narcan: Dosage/Route
PEDS
PEDS: PDC IN/IM/IV; MR
Narcan: Dosage/Route
Adults/PEDS (opioid dependent pain management patients)
Adults/PEDS:
“use caution and titrate”
Narcan: Contraindications
None
Narcan: Side effects
- Acute withdraws symptoms
- Nausea/vomiting
- Tachycardia/hypertension
Narcan: Packaging
1mg/1ml
Narcan: Administration
If giving IV, titrate to effect of controlling respirations.
For titrate dosing:
- ADULT: dilute IV dose (2mg) to 10ml with NS (new concentration = 0.1mg/0.5ml)
- PEDS: dilute 1mg to 10ml with NS (new concentration = 0.1 mg/1ml)
Narcotic Analgesics:
- Some of these analgesics are not true opiates yet work and react similarly. Naloxone is an effective antidote for all of these:
- Heroin
- Fentanyl
- Hydrocodone
- Morphine
- Oxycodone
