What are Nabothian cysts?
Fluid filled cysts seen on the surface of the cervix
How big are Nabothian cysts?
1cm in size but can be larger
How do Nabothian cysts form?
The columnar epithelium produces mucus, When the squamous epithelium of the ectocervix slightly covers the mucus secreting columnar epithelium, the mucus becomes trapped and forms a cyst
This can happen after childbirth, trauma or infection
Describe the presentation of Nabothian cysts
Usually asymptomatic and incidentally found
Rarely if large may cause a pelvic fullness
Describe how the Nabothian cysts look
Smooth rounded bumps on the cervix near to the os
White/yellow appearance
Describe the management of Nabothian cysts
Reassurance and no treatment required
If diagnosis is uncertain then excised or biopsied to exclude other pathology
Rarely treated with colposcopy to relieve symptoms
