Myocarditis Flashcards
Main pattern of myocarditis presentation
Recent onset heart failure
Arrhythmias
Chest pain
Myocarditis
Myocarditis, also known as inflammatory cardiomyopathy, includes any pathologic process in which inflammation involving the myocardium is identified.
If suspected, immediate referral is needed
Myocarditis and cardiomyopathy
Cardiomyopathy is any situation in which myocardial function is impaired while myocarditis is one cause of dilated cardiomyopathy
Myocarditis causes
Infectious agent
Toxins
Drug-related allergies
Chronic virus
Myocarditis presentation
Initial presentation can be varied and ranges from mild symptoms of fever, atypical chest pain, fatigue, and palpitations with possible transient electrocardiographic (ECG) changes to potentially fatal cardiogenic shock and/or arrhythmias and sudden death.
Tend to be younger patients
Myocarditis Red Flag
Resting tachycardia with exaggerated chronotropic response to exertion
Low fever and tachycardia
Myocarditis Lab Finding
Non-specific EKG findings
Elevated ESR, CRP, CPK, BNP
Myocarditis Management
Specialist referral
Avoid exercise for 6 months
HF medications - ACE-I, ARBs, Diuretics, Beta Blockers
