mw- the memory system: Baddley and Hitch Flashcards
What is the phonological loop?
deals with the auditory information from the sense and helps produce the memory trace.
Has a phonological store and an articulatory system that helps it produces a memory trace. The memory trace can be sent to the long term memory where it can trigger a motor programme.
What is the visuospatial sketchpad?
used to temporarily store visual and spatial information. Concerns visual, spatial and helps with feel.
Holds info about what we see and is divided into 2 sections.
what are the two sections of the visuospatial sketchpad?
=visual cache (holds info about form and colour)
=innerscribe (deals with spatial and movement)
What is a memory trace?
mental idea of the skill
What is a motor programme?
a more permanent trace of a skill
What does the working memory consist of?
A central control centre ie. the central executive
What is the central executive?
The control centre of the working memory model, using three other systems to control all the info moving in and out of the memory system.
Quickly identifies which info should be sent to its sub-memory systems.
What is the episodic buffer?
co-ordinates the sight, hearing and movement information from the working memory into sequences to be sent to the long term memory. Integrated sequences produces patterns of skilled actions that are put in order and sent to the motor programmes. These are the starting point for motor programmes
What is the working memory?
=picks up relevant information from the sporting environment
=has links with the LTM sending coded information for future storage and use
=produces a memory trace which it sent to the LTM to be compared and is then sent back
What is the long term memory?
=receives info from the working memory and has unlimited capacity for the storage of motor programmes
actions of a memory system?
- working memory initiates the action by sending a memory trace
- can only deal with around 7 items at a time so some relevant info may be lost
- important info stored in the LTM to form a motor programme
strategies to ensure items are stored in the LTM
rewards association mental practice chunking focus repetition chaining
