what is the cognitive stage
- performer has to think carefully about their actions
- try to copy demonstrations and instructions given
- movements are slow and unco-ordinated
- motor programmes not developed yet
- trial and error used
what’s the motor programme
the components of the skill that can be stored in the memory
what’s the associative stage
it is longer than the cognitive
practice
trial and error still used to perfect skills
comparison to top class performer and then adjusting performance to reach that level
movements are smoother and more co-ordinated

whats the autonomous stage
practice must continue to stay in this stage of learning
actions are fluent, efficient and automatically undertaken
performer concentrates on the finer details of the task
motor programme is fully developed
performer classed as an expert
