mw- Factors that influence response time Flashcards
Reaction time
=time taken from the onset of the stimulus to onset of response
response time
=time taken from onset of stimulus to the completion of the task
movement time
=time taken to complete a task
Response time=
reaction time + movement time
Anticipation is…
when a sports performer tries to pre-judge a stimulus
2 aspects:
Temporal- when its going to happen
spatial- where and what
2 forms of reaction time are…
SIMPLE
CHOICE
what is simple reaction time?
involves one stimulus and one possible response
what is choice reaction time?
involves the performer being presented with numerous stimuli, each with a different response
What is hicks law?
describes the relationship between the number of choices and response time
what does hicks law state?
as the number of choices increases, so does the reaction time.
Not always a linear relationship… players become familiar with their environment
What is the single channel hypothesis?
this states that a stimulus can only be processed one at a time. A second stimulus must wait until the first has been processed.
What is the psychological refractory period?
This explains the delay that occurs because we can only process one stimulus at a time.
A delay when a second stimulus is presented before the first had been processed.
How can you improve response time?
- mental practice (works best with closed serial skills)
- use anticipation
- improving reaction time
- learning to focus and concentrate
- improved fitness
