mw- lesson 7 Flashcards
What is a learning plateau?
is a period during performance when there are no signs of improvement
the lack of improvement is shown on a graph called the learning curve
what is the learning curve?
the four stages on a graph that a novice passes through when repeatedly performing a closed skill over time
what are the key features of a closed skill?
less decision making
more predictable environment
performer knows exactly what they should do
stage one of the learning curve
rate of learning is slow
performance level is poor
trial and error learning
stage two of the learning curve
rapid increase in rate of learning
some success
reinforcement and motivation achieved
stage three of the learning curve
hits plateau
no improvement
performance stays the same
stage four of the learning curve
period towards the end of task when perhaps fatigue has set in and performance starts to deteriorate
the stage four drop
means the drop in rate of improvement/performance starts to get worse is a concept called drive reduction
what is drive reduction
it occurs because the performer has gained success and the initial drive to succeed has been lost
OR
the challenge of mastering a new task has been lost and a new challenge is needed to maintain motivation
causes of plateau (6)
lack of motivation boredom coaching limit of ability targets set too low fatigue
how to avoid plateau (7)
- extend the task to challenge the performer
- new coach to raise performance levels
- as a coach- provide rewards/encouragement to maintain motivation
- give breaks to allow for recovery
- make practices fun/varied to avoid boredom
- explain the plateau concept so that they are aware
- player get some feedback to improve performance and motivation
cognitive theory definition
using experience and understanding to solve problems relating to the whole skill
the performer uses existing knowledge to form an idea of how to deal with problematic sporting situations
