Mutations Flashcards
1
Q
What can Mutations be?
A
- Harmful
- Beneficial
- Neutral
2
Q
Define ‘Mutation’
A
- Change to an organism’s DNA base sequence
3
Q
What can a mutation do?
A
- Affect the sequence of amino acids in the protein which could then affect the shape of the protein and so its function
4
Q
How can mutations affect an organism?
A
- As the characteristics of an organism can be affected
5
Q
Describe how a mutation can be Harmful
A
- A mutation could cause a genetic disorder, such as cystic fibrosis
6
Q
Describe how a mutation can be Beneficial
A
- A mutation could produce a new characteristic that is beneficial to the organism
- E.g. a mutation in genes on bacterial plasmid’s can make them resistant to antibiotics
7
Q
Then, describe how a mutation can be Neutral
A
- Some mutations are neither harmful neither beneficial
- E.g they don’t affect a protein’s function
