DNA Flashcards
1
Q
What is ‘DNA’?
A
- A double helix of paired bases
2
Q
What does a ‘DNA Molecule’ have?
A
- Two strands coiled together in the shape of a double helix (two spirals)
3
Q
How are strands held together?
A
- By chemicals called bases
- The four bases are: Adenine (A), Cytosine (C), Guanine (G) and Thymine (T)
4
Q
How do the bases pair?
A
- Always in the same way which A-T and C-G.
- This is called base pairing
5
Q
Define ‘Gene’
A
- Section of DNA, and the sequence of bases in a gene code for a specific code
6
Q
Describe the work which Franklin and Wilkins did in the discovery of DNA
A
- They worked out that DNA had a helical structure by directing beams of x-rays onto crystalised DNA
7
Q
Describe what happens they did as the X-Rays bounce off
A
- They looked at the patterns which they formed
