Genetic Engineering Flashcards
1
Q
What does Genetic Engineering use?
A
- Enzymes to cut and paste genes
2
Q
How does Genetic Engineering take place?
A
- A useful gene is ‘cut’ out from one organism’s chromosome using enzymes
3
Q
How are Enzymes used in GE?
A
- Enzymes are used to cut another organism’s chromosome and then to insert the useful gene
4
Q
What does this technique produce?
A
- Genetically modified organisms
- E.g. human genes which can be used to make GM bacteria
5
Q
What are the three main benefits of GE?
A
- Reduces Vitamin A deficinecy
- Produces Human Insulin
- Increases Crop Yield
6
Q
What can Vitamin A deficiency lead to?
A
- Someone going blind but Golden Rice is used to treat it, as it contains two genes from other organisms which together enable the rice, to produce beta-cartone
