mutations Flashcards
what is a change to a base called
a mutation
if a single base has changed what happens to the shape of a protein
a single base has changed this doesn’t change the amino acid sequence as different base triplets can code for the same amino acid
if the protein has a different amino acid what happens to it’s shape
if the protein has a different amino acid its shape will change. This can change the function of a protein as the active site of an enzyme may change shape so it no longer fits its substrate
what happens if the chromosomes also contain non coding parts of DNA
THESE REGIONS SWITCH GENES ON/OFF
AND TELL GENES WHEN TO PRODUCE PROTEINS
If mutated these non coding sections can affect how genes are turned on/off this means the cell could produce a protein that it’s not meant to at that time
