mneosis and fertilsation Flashcards
1
Q
in what type of organs does meiosis only take place in
A
reproductive organs
2
Q
explain the stages of meiosis
A
- all of the chromosomes are copied
- the cell then divides into 2
- both of the cells then divide one more time forming gametes (the chromosomes are now singular)
MEIOSIS PRODUCES 4 GAMETES FROM ONE CELL WHICH ARE ALL GENETICALLY DIFFERENT
3
Q
explain the process of fertilisation
A
- in fertilisation, the gamete from the male fuses with the gametes from the female so the chromosomes pair up (the cell now has the normal number of chromosomes 23 pairs)
4
Q
what happens after a normal body cell is formed by fertilisation
A
the cell will divide by mitosis to form a collection of cells called an embryo as the embryo develops the cell will differentiate forming different cell types
