Music Flashcards
Clipping
Or sometimes referred to as “peaking”. This is when a channel or track in a DAW has too much volume or signal, therefore the sound starts to distort and get ‘ugly’.
Doubling
tracks (often vocal) needs to be recorded on top of eachother so that the sound is extra “full” and “strong”
Latency
The amount of delay between the input and the output of a signal.
EQ
“Equalizing” a track or an entire song, you are making sure that overall sound balance is quality. This is almost always determined by 3 controls. The Bass (or low), The Middle, and High (or Treble).
Reverb
Elec Echo
Key Signatures
Every song, melody etc. that ever existed is written in a “key” whether the artist or engineer knows it or not. There are 2 types of key signatures….
Major Keys: Songs or melodies written in major keys generally sound uplifting or “happy”.
Minor Keys: Songs or melodies written in minor keys sound sad or intense.
Bars & Time Signatures
These determine how many beats are in a ‘bar’ of music. 4/4 time - the first number is the important one. It tells you how many beats are in a bar.
Bars: A single unit of time containing a specific number of beats.
Quantize
artist doesn’t perform the ‘take’ perfectly. An audio engineer can ‘quantize’ the track to make the rhythm’s like up perfectly and to change the pitch if there is a glaring error.
“Pan” and Compression
Quite simply, this is to move or adjust the sound from L to R speaker or L to R headphone.
Transposition
‘transpose’ means to pitch shift or alter the pitch
