Chem Vocab Flashcards
Element
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
Compound
a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture.
Atom
An atom is a particle of matter that uniquely defines a chemical element
Molecule
A molecule is two or more atoms connected by chemical bonds,
Physical Property
Can be observed or measured
Chem property
A chemical property describes the ability of a substance to
change into a new substance or substances.
Ion
an atom or group of atoms that carries a positive or negative electric charge as a result of having lost or gained one or more electrons
Molecular
relating to or consisting of molecules.
Metal
Metals are opaque, lustrous elements that are good conductors of heat and electricity.
Non metal
The non-metals are elements on the right of the periodic table. Non-metals can be gases, liquids or solids. Non-metals are dull in colour, not shiny like metals. You can’t hammer or shape a non-metal; it will just shatter if you hit it. Sulphur is an example of a non-metal.
Ionic bond
Ionic bonds are formed between two or more atoms by the transfer of one or more electrons between atoms.
Stable octet
A stable arrangement is attended when the atom is surrounded by eight electrons.
Metalloid
A metalloid is a chemical element that exhibits some metal and some nonmetal properties.
Malleability
ability to be hammered (qual)
Lustre
Ability to reflect light (qual)
