What are long bones?
Bears the weight of the body.
ex. Humerus, femur
What is a short bone?
Similar shape to long bones but with less prominent ends.
Allow skill of ease of movement
Ex bones of ankles, wrist, fingers and toes
What are flat bones?
Are plate like structure with broad surfaces
Protects organs
Ex. Ribs, skull, scapulae
What are irregular bones?
Bones that have variety of of shapes and are usually connected to several other bones
Ex. Facial bones and vertebrae
What is a ball and socket joints?
Allows movement in all directions
Made up of rounded end of bone
Ex. Hips and shoulders
What are hinge joints?
Allows movement in one direction
Ex. Elbow
What are pivot joints?
Allows turning from side to side
Ex. Skull connected to spine
What is cartilage?
Cushions the end of each bone
What is synovial lining?
Forms a capsule and secretes fluid for lubrication
What are the types of muscle?
Skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle
What are the types of muscle movement?
Flexion and extension
What are the functions of musculoskeletal system?
Support
Protection
Movement
Mineral storage
Blood cell formation
What are 3 important functions that muscles perform?
Maintenance of posture
Movement of body parts
Production of body heat
What changes happen with age in the musculoskeletal system?
Muscles Atrophy (shrink) and decrease in strength
Degeneration of joints
Loss of bone mass (osteoporosis)
Decrease in hip and knee joint flexibility
