Endocrine system Flashcards
What is the function of endocrine glands?
Gland secrete chemical substances called hormones
Hormones regulate activities of other organs and glance in the body
Hormones also play a role in gross reproduction
What is the function of the endocrine system?
To produce and secrete hormones to regular body functions
What is the pituitary gland?
Regulates growth and sexual development
Acts as a master gland
What is the thyroid gland?
Produces a hormone which regulates metabolism, the rate at which we use oxygen and food mainly responsible for energy levels
What is the parathyroid gland?
Controls the bodies use of calcium and phosphorus
Necessary for proper muscle, contraction, and conduction of nerve impulses
What is the pancreas?
Produces the hormone insulin
Insulin regulates the level of sugar in the blood
What is the adrenal gland?
They produce hormones which help the body react and adapt to stress
Please an important parts in metabolism and fluid ballots
What are ovaries?
Produce the hormones, estrogen, and progesterone which are essential in the reproductive processes of women
What are testes?
They produce the hormone testosterone which is responsible for the masculine physical characteristics, and which stimulate the production of sperm
What is the thymus?
Produces hormones that promote development of immune system cells
What are the Effects of age to the endocrine system?
Decrease metabolism due to a decrease in hormone production
What is diabetes?
A disorder in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or the insulin that is produced cannot be properly used
Insulin is created by the pancreas and is necessary for the movement of glucose from the blood into the cells
What is type one diabetes?
Also referred to as insulin dependence
The body is not producing insulin therefore the individual must take insulin by injection
What is type two diabetes?
Also referred to his non-insulin dependent
The body can produce some insulin, but not enough for normal function
The client may take oral medication and or be able to control the diabetes with a combination of diet control, weight management, and exercise
What is hypoglycemia?
Low blood sugar
Can be caused by -too much insulin, not eating enough, too much exercise
