Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
Muscle contraction types
______ - The tension developed in muscle remains constant while muscle changes its length
______ - Tension generated is not enough to exceed the resistance of the object to be moved → muscle does not change its length
Isotonic contraction
Isometric contraction
Concentric contraction and eccentric contraction belongs to _____ contraction.
isotonic
Concentric contraction
Tension vs resistance & result:
Tension > resistance of the object → muscle shortens
Eccentric contraction
Tension vs resistance & result:
Tension < resistance of the object → muscle lengthens
______ metabolism cause muscle fatigue
Anaerobic
_____ activities (e.g. weight-lifting exercise, 50-meter running)
* Use fast fibers
* Fatigue quickly with strenuous activity
Anaerobic
_______:
Immovable joints
Very strong
Bone edges may touch or interlock
Movement between bones must be prevented
Synarthroses
Examples of synarthrosis:
Suture, gomphosis, synchondrosis, synostosis
_______ - give more movement for muscles than a synarthrosis does; articulating bones connected by collagen fibers or cartilage
Amphiarthroses
Compare amphiarthroses with diathrosis (Synovial joints/movable joints)
Amphiarthroses articulated bones connected by collagen fibers or cartilage, which allow fewer movement than a diathrosis. And it is stronger than diathrosis.
Diathrosis are synovial joints/ movable joints at the ends of long bones. Within articular capsules and lined with synovial membrane.
