Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
What is the locomotion system?
Made up of bones, joints, muscles and tendons.
They all work together so we can move
What does the axial skeleton consist of?
Skull, spine, ribs and sternum
What is the appendicular skeleton made up of?
Shoulder girdle, pelvis, upper & lower limbs, clavicale & scapular
What makes up the internal bone
Spongy bone Red bone marrow Medullary cavity Yellow marrow Compact bone Periosteum
What makes up the external bone?
Epiphysis
Diaphysis
Cartilage
What are the types of bone?
Long: e.g femur
Short: e.g wrist, ankle bones
Flat: e.g sternum, ribs
Irregular: vertebrae
Sesamoid: e.g patella
Surreal: the skill
What are the three types of bone cell?
- osteocytes = bone cells
- osteoclasts= break down bony matrix
- osteoblasts= bone forming cells
What is the function of tendons
Attach skeletal muscle to bones to enable movement
What is the function of ligaments?
They are strong cords of fibrous tissue at the joint that binds bone
What is a joint?
When 2 or more bones join
What are the types of joints?
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
What is the fibrous joint?
They are connective tissue joints that’s around the surface of bone to bind them together
What is the cartilaginous joint?
It connects by cartilage and allows slight movement
What is synovial joint? Yeah
Produces and secretes synovial fluid which lubricates joints to allow movement
What are the three types of muscle?
Cardiac - muscle of the heart (myocardium). Regulated by cardiovascular system
Skeletal- enables movement & contracts when required. Holds body upright
Smooth- found in the walls of hollow organs, contracts to regulate movement
