Musculoskeletal Growth/Injury & Repair Flashcards
What are ligaments?
Dense bands of collagenous tissue
Where are ligaments found?
Spanning across a joint
What are ligaments attached to?
Bone at either end
What are the functions of the ligaments?
To provide stability to the joint throughout a range of motions
What type of collagen fibres make up ligaments?
Type 1
What cell type makes up collagen?
Fibroblasts
Apart from collagen, what other fibres make up ligaments?
Sensory fibres (proprioception, stretch, sensory)
What type of pattern is found on ligaments and why is this pattern important?
Crimping pattern - it allows the ligaments to stretch
In terms of composition, how are ligaments different to tendons?
1 - Ligaments have a lower percentage of collagen
2 - Ligaments have a higher percentage of proteoglycans and water
3 - Less organized collagen fibres
4 - Rounder fibroblasts
Following rupture of ligaments, what sensation can be lost?
Proprioception
What are the different types of ligament rupture?
Complete
Incomplete
What are the 3 phases of ligament healing?
Haemorrhage
Proliferative phase
Remodelling
During which phase of healing do blood clots form?
Haemorrhage
During which phase of ligament healing is scar tissue formed?
Proliferative phase
What are the treatment options for ligament damage?
Conservative
Operative
