Q

How might you explain Paget’s disease to a patient?

A

Paget’s disease of bone interferes with your body’s normal recycling process, in which new bone tissue gradually replaces old bone tissue. Over time, the disease causes affected bones to become fragile and misshapen. Paget’s disease of bone most commonly occurs in the pelvis, skull, spine and legs.

Q

Describe how to perform Thompson’s test.

A

As the calf muscles are squeezed proximally, the examiner watches for plantarflexion of the foot. In a positive test, there is no plantarflexion, indicating a discontinuity between the insertion and the muscle due to acute rupture.
