15
Q

What is a smooth muscle?

A

Weakest of all muscle tissues, found in organs and perform unique functions like grinding, churning, or moving (involuntary)

16
Q

What is skeletal muscle?

A

Connect to the skeleton in at least one place to move parts of bones closer to each other (voluntary)

17
Q

How do muscles get their names?

A

Location, size, direction, number of origins, and shape

18
Q

What is an “origin”?

A

Where the muscle connects to the anchor bone. It moves little, if at all

19
Q

What is an “insertion”?

A

Where the muscle connects to the movable bone

20
Q

What are the two types of connective tissue?

A

Tendons and Facia

21
Q

What are tendons?

A

Dense layered collagen fibers that attach muscle to a bone

22
Q

What are Facia?

A

Dense layered collagen fibers that surrounds muscles and connects muscle to muscle

23
Q

What are the types of muscle movements?

A

Adduction, Abduction, Flexion, Extension, Rotation, Circumduction

24
Q

What other body systems work with the muscular system?

A

The nervous system works with the voluntary muscular system to move the skeletal system.

If nerves are severed, they will not be able to produce voluntary muscle movement. (paralyzation)

25
Q

What are the four major diseases of the muscular system?

A

Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and tendonitis

26
Q

What is Muscular Dystrophy?

A

A genetic disease that causes damage of muscle fiber, causing weakness, immobility, and imbalance

27
Q

What is cerebral palsy?

A

A congenital disorder that affects the posture, balance, and motor functions

28
Q

What is Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)?

A

A neurodegenerative disease that causes loss of control on voluntary muscles. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease

29
Q

What is Tendonitis?

A

Tendons get inflamed or irritated. Most common in wrists, elbows, shoulders, and heels. Causes pain and swelling
