Muscular system Flashcards
Slow twitch oxidative (type I)
- slow contraction speed
- low force produced
- low tendency to fatigue
- aerobic
- endurance based
- requires oxygen to function
Fast twitch oxidative glycolytic (type IIA)
- Fast contraction speed
- medium tendency to fatigue
- speed and strength based
- anaerobic
Fast twitch glycolytic (Type IIB)
- fast contraction speed
- high force produced
- high tendency to fatigue
- anaerobic
- speed and strength based
Describe a concentric muscle contraction
When the muscle shortens while contracting.
E.g. upward phase of bicep curl.
Describe a eccentric muscle contraction
When the muscle lengthens while contracting.
E.g. downward phase of bicep curl
Describe a isometric muscle contraction
When the muscle length stays the same while contracting.
E.g. plank hold
Describe an action potential
Positive electrical charge inside the nerve and muscle cells which conducts the nerve impulse down the neuron and into the muscle fibre.
Describe the all or none law
If a motor unit receives a stimulus and creates an action potential which reaches the muscle fibres and contract OR NOT
