Superior longitudinal muscle
Elevates the tongue and it can retract ILM (inferior longitudinal muscle)
Inferior longitudinal muscle
Lowers the side of the tongue and pulls tongue tip down
Transverse muscle
Pulls edges of the tongue toward midline. Narrowing the tongue.
Vertical muscle
Pulls tongue toward the floor of the mouth.
Extrinsic muscles (where and action)
Outside of the tongue; changes position of the tongue.
Genioglossus
Prime mover; does most of the action of the tongue.
Hyoglossus (hyoid connection)
Pulls sides of the tongue down; antagonist to palatoglossus
Styloglossus
Draws the tongue back and up
Palatoglossus
Pulls sides of the tongue up
