Muscles of the Neck and Vertebral Column Flashcards
Where is the sternocleidomastoid located?
Deep to the platysma
What is the sternocleidomastoid a prime mover of?
Head flexion
What is the function of the sternocleidomastoid?
A) Rotates head to the OPPOSITE side
B) Tilts head to THE SAME side
Where are the scalenes located?
More lateral, deep to the sternocleidomastoid and platysma
What is the function of the scalenes?
Elevates the first 2 pairs of ribs, plays a role in coughing, flex and rotate the neck
What is the function of the splenius muscle when BOTH sides are working?
Head extension
What is the function of the splenius muscle when ONE side is working?
Head rotation to the SAME side
The erector spinae are prime movers of which movement?
Back extension
What are the 3 columns of erector spinae muscles?
iliocostalis, longissimus, spinalis
What is the function of the erector spinae?
Provide resistance when bending forward, act as extensors to return the spine to an erect position
Where is the semispinalis located?
Deeper in the back
What is the function of the semispinalis?
Extends the vertebral column and head, rotates the head
The semispinalis is synergistic with which muscle?
The sternocleidomastoid
