Origin- lateral tibial condyle, the proximal anterior tibia
Insertion- medial foot- first cuneiform and first metatarsal
Functions-
Dorsiflexes the foot at the ankle joint
Inverts the foot at the subtalar joint
Gastrocnemius (of triceps surae group)
Origin- medial and lateral femoral condyles
Insertion- the posterior surface of the calcaneus via the Achilles’ tendon
Functions-
Plantar flexes the foot at the ankle joint
Flexes the leg at the knee joint
Soleus (of triceps surae group)
Origin- soleal line of the tibia and the head and proximal 1/3 of the fibula
Insertion-
Posterior surface of the calcaneus via the Achilles’ tendon

Origin- posterior tibia and fibula
Insertion- navicular tuberosity

Insertion- the plantar surface of the distal phalanges of toes 2-5
