Muscles Of The Hip Joint Flashcards
Psoas major (of iliopsoas)
Origin- anterolateral lumbar spine
Insertion- lesser trochanter of the femur
Functions-
Flexes, abducts and laterally rotates the thigh at the hip joint
Posteriorly tilts the pelvis at the LS joint
Iliacus (of iliopsoas)
Origin- upper iliac fossa and anterior inferior iliac spine and sacral ala
Insertion- lesser trochanter of the femur
Functions-
Flexes and laterally rotates the thigh at the hip joint
Adductor longus
Origin- anterior body of the pubis
Insertion- the medial lip of the linea aspera of the femur
Functions-
Adducts and flexes the thigh at the hip joint
Adductor Magnus
Origin-
Anterior head- inferior pubis ramus and the ramus of the ischium
Posterior head- ischial tuberosity
Insertion- linea aspera of the femur
Functions-
Adducts and extends the thigh at the hip joint
Gluteus maximus
Origin- posterior iliac crest, posterolateral sacrum and the Coccyx
Insertion- iliotibial band and the gluteal tuberosity of the femur
Functions-
Extends and laterally rotates the thigh at the hip joint
Abducts the thigh (upper 1/3) and adducts (lower 2/3) at the hip joint
Gluteus medius
Origin- external ilium, inferior to the iliac crest
Insertion- lateral surface of the greater trochanter of the femur
Functions-
Abducts the thigh at the hip joint
Posterior fibres- extends and laterally rotates the thigh
Anterior fibres- flexes and medially rotates the thigh
Gluteus minimus
Origin- external ilium between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines
Insertion- anterior surface of the greater trochanter of the femur
Functions-
Abducts the thigh at the hip joint
Anterior fibres- flexes and medially rotates the thigh
Posterior fibres- extends and laterally rotates the fibres
Piriformis
Origin- anterior sacrum- anterior surface of the sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion- supermedial surface of the greater trochanter of the femur
Functions-
Laterally rotates, horizontally extends and medially rotates the thigh at the hip joint
